This position is a unique full-time opportunity for an experienced route setter and climbing coach. Applicants must possess a solid foundation of climbing, route setting and coaching skills for a well-rounded steward of customer development.

AS A CLIMBING COACH,

...you have excellent communication skills with climbers young and old. You are hungry for climber development with a thirst to improve your own skills as a climber, and coach. You understand there is no absolute magic beta and each climber will bring forward his/her own skills and capabilities. Your coaching is nimble, you are adaptable in your approach to adjust to various learning styles. You experience pure joy from the progression of others which feeds your desire to grow as a coach, a route setter and mentor in the climbing community.

AS A ROUTE SETTER,

...you can choreograph movement on the wall through the strategic placement and positioning of climbing holds. You are creative in your approach, striking a balance between form and function to create inspiring climbs that look and climb awesome. THE NUTS AND BOLTS OF ROUTE SETTING

  • Contribute to bouldering and route setting tasks 

    • Ensure that climbs are graded, taped, holds are set-screwed, and all tools are put away

    • During the setting process, ensuring proper safety protocols are being followed as per the Aspire standards

  • Produce High Quality Product 

    • Route setters must be qualified to set at the appropriate level of difficulty and ensuring every move on every climb is complete.

    • Always deferring to our Five Star standard guidelines ensuring climbs set are fun, challenging and safe, while incorporating creative elements of aesthetics and composition

  • Inventory Control 

    • Manage inventory of hardware and supplies

    • Communicating with Head Route Setter and management if supplies are needed that pertain to route setting and wall maintenance

  • Facility Maintenance

    • Perform safety inspections pertaining to the climbing walls, ropes, auto-belays and flooring

    • Report to gym manager before issues arise and perform tasks to rectify issues

  • Creatively Critical

    • Listen to feedback from multiple sources in a positive manner and defer to the judgment of the Head Route Setter and General Manager to expand one’s own practices

  • Progressive Learning

    • Keeping up to speed on the latest route setting trends and participating in the evolution of the craft

    • On the vanguard of news idea to expand one’s own repertoire of movements

THE NUTS AND BOLTS OF COACHING

  • Coaching of the Vanguards advanced youth climbing program and Crave adult programs

    • Coaching may begin as a support role with development path to lead programs

    • Working with existing curriculums and contributing to the expansion of lessons and skills

  • High Quality Instruction

    • Provide excellent instruction through various teaching methods to adjust for individual and group learning

    • Ensuring the highest level of safety is upheld for athletes and our patrons in all types of climbing offered

  • Coordinate and promote youth and adult climbing programs

    • Updating lesson plans with new ideas, skills, workouts and communication tools

    • Updating other coaches and ensuring consistency in delivery

    • Actively promote and encourage participation and enrollment

  • Identify areas for growth or improvement within the program schedule

    • Staying abreast to customer needs to adjust program schedules and offerings as needed

  • Organization

    • Maintain an organized curriculum for ease of implementation for coaches

    • Maintain a clean and organized gym environment for all customers and staff

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

  • Skilled climber and route setter with a minimum of 1 years of experience in a commercial climbing facility

    • You posses advanced technical climbing skills with the ability to climb and set V7 and 5.12-

    • You are a well-rounded setter possessing both bouldering and route setting capabilities

    • You are comfortable working at heights with ladders and/or ropes

    • You are creative and inventive to produce climbs that look and climb awesome

    • You are detail oriented with excellent time management skills independently and within team efforts

  • Technical climbing coach with a minimum of 1 year of experience

    • You are a technician that understands movement with the ability to instruct basic and advanced skills to various age groups and skill levels

    • You are a learner, seeking new methods for coaching, training and development

  • General skills and qualifications

    • You are mature and professional with a commitment to a career path as a commercial route setter and climbing coach

    • You are proficient at top-rope and lead climbing

    • You have previous experience working with youth

    • You are fun, outgoing, positive and kind with the ability to bring out the best in others

    • You are flexible, eager to learn and willing to adapt to new responsibilities

    • You demonstrate initiative, with the ability to identify and solve problems

    • You are safety oriented, with the ability to uphold rules and policies for the safety of self and others

    • You lead by example

    • You possess basic computer skills

WORK HOURS:

Full-Time Hourly

PAY LEVEL:

$18 per hour (based on qualifications)​

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Staff must be able to perform manual labour, including working at height. Staff must be comfortable with lifting objects up to roughly 50 pounds. Vulnerable sector check required.
